Having begun his career working with two prestigious painters, Isidore Pils and Carolus-Duran, Duez became one of the principal actors on the artistic scene in the late 19th century. Influenced by Manet and the beginnings of impressionism, he turned to landscape painting and settled in Normandy. Duez was also very much in demand for the decoration of public buildings. We owe to him in particular the decorative panels with Virgile as their theme at the Sorbonne, as well as La botanique and La Physique at the Hôtel de Ville in Paris
